Talapatra Chitra handcarving Gift Box
Description
Talapatra Chitra — The Ancient Palm Leaf Art of Odisha
This piece celebrates Talapatra Chitra, a centuries-old Odisha craft once used to record sacred texts and epics on palm leaves before paper existed. Palm leaves are sun-dried for months, treated with turmeric for a golden hue, then hand-engraved with a fine iron stylus. Lamp-black is rubbed into the etched grooves to reveal delicate, permanent black linework — no paint, just pure engraving.
Closely tied to the Jagannath temple traditions of Puri, this thousand-year-old art survives today through generations of tribal and folk artisans across Odisha.
This box pairs hand-carved floral woodwork with an ikat-inspired textile lining, divided into four compartments — a functional keepsake box rooted in authentic Indian craft heritage. Size --8x8"
